What is WalkCT
WalkCT is a program of the Connecticut Forest & Park Association, the oldest conservation organization in the state. This initiative was established to connect people to the outdoors, build awareness of our valuable resources, develop routes for non-motorized transportation, and promote healthy living in Connecticut. Research shows that outdoor activities enhance quality of life by improving physical, mental, and spiritual health. Our goal is to foster Connecticut as a state where sidewalks meet trails, where cities are linked to towns, and no resident is further than 15 minutes away from a great walk. To accomplish this, WalkCT employs three tools: an informative website, guided outdoor activities, and community outreach.
Informative Website
WalkCT.org is the cornerstone of the WalkCT program. On this engaging, searchable site, visitors have a clearinghouse of information on Connecticut pathways and trails right at their fingertips. They can also explore community event listings, discover healthy living strategies, and connect with like-minded neighbors and organizations.
Guided Outdoor Activities
Since 1929, CFPA has been growing and maintaining the Blue-Blazed Hiking Trails for all to enjoy. The WalkCT Family Rambles put these trails and other walking routes and outdoor resources to good use. These free, CFPA-sponsored outings are led by trained WalkCT Family Guides and are scheduled the last weekend of every month. WalkCT Family Rambles are fun, easygoing, and designed to introduce families to the joy and benefits of spending time together outdoors.
Community Outreach
Teamwork and collaboration is at the core of all we do at CFPA. Seeing WalkCT as a program that benefits everyone, we work to bring together the health, recreation, tourism, art, historic, education, transportation, and economic development communities to enhance their outreach endeavors through outdoor activities. WalkCT offers technical assistance to municipalities and organizations interested in developing safe, well-marked, accessible footpaths and walking programs for their citizens. We also provide guidance to communities to help unite their resources and boost tourism and economic development.
